The GCS Earth Science unit is staffed by qualified Pedologists, Engineering Geologists and Geologists.  Areas of expertise are utilized in the environmental, agricultural, forestry and industrial sectors, as well as in the mining and engineering sectors.

The unit is involved in a wide range of activities including:

• Soil classification and mapping
• Environmental impact studies  for the mining, agricultural and industrial sectors
• Environmental management programme related studies – mining and industrial licensing and closure
• Baseline investigations and rehabilitation studies
• Site selection studies – agriculture, forestry and change of land use
• Engineering and geotechnical studies - foundations, roads, dams, tunnels, earthworks, slope stability and waste disposal
• Geological mineral exploration

The Earth Science unit has a broad base of expertise across multiple sectors and is capable of undertaking and satisfying the above specialised needs of industry.  The unit has gained valuable experience in the course of its involvement in a wide range of project types over the past eighteen years.  The statutory requirements relating to the inclusion of pedological and geological studies as part of Environmental Impact

Assessments and Environmental Management Programme Reports are integral to the success of any project.  Likewise, the success of any change of land use, whether it be agricultural to housing, or undetermined to forestry, is dependent on a sound base plan from which broad strategies and detailed designs can be formulated.
