ENGINEERING SERVICES

Our Philosophy

The GCS Engineering unit promotes a philosophy of offering innovative and economically competitive engineering services, while maintaining a high standard of professional performance from each member of the unit. Our range of engineering skills can be utilized in a wide range of sectors, including the environmental, agricultural, forestry, industrial and mining sectors. These engineering skills include the following:

  • Site selection studies for earth dams, waste disposal facilities, residue disposal facilities
  • Feasibility studies for earth dams, waste disposal facilities, residue disposal
    facilities
  • Detailed design for earth dams, waste disposal facilities, residue disposal facilities
  • Erosion studies and mitigation
  • Hydrological investigations
  • Surface water management
  • Geotechnical investigations
  • Quality control earthworks
  • Slope stability assessment
  • Seepage modelling
  • Closure and rehabilitation

Site selection, feasibility and detailed design

Site selection is without a doubt one of the most important steps in determining the best available site for the development of engineering structures. GCS’s engineering expertise and experience provides a sound base for the selection of the best available site for engineered development.

The engineering unit also offers competitive packages for design, both feasibility and detailed, of waste disposal facilities, residue disposal facilities and earth water dams.

Surface Water Hydrology

The engineering unit offers hydrological services to a broad spectrum of clients in the fields of:

  • Drainage system design and storm water reticulation
  • Surface water management and planning
  • Surface run-off calculations

Geotechnical Investigations

Geotechnical investigations involve the exploration of ground conditions at and below the surface, and they are a prerequisite for the successful and economic design of engineering structures and earthworks. GCS’s geotechnical expertise can be applied to a wide range of projects, including the following:

  • Tailings dams
  • Road construction and rehabilitation
  • Infrastructure development (dams, roads, tunnels)
  • Housing developments and town planning
  • Mining operations (dams, roads, underground, open pit)
  • Materials selection (soils, gravels, crushed rock)
  • Slope stability assessment
  • Earthworks and materials design
  • Rock Engineering

Quality Control Earthworks

A typical Quality Assurance programme comprises a planned system of activities that will provide assurance that the product is constructed as specified in the detailed design.

The Quality Assurance will include inspections, verifications, audits and evaluations of material and workmanship necessary to determine and document the quality of the product constructed.

Closure and Rehabilitations

Closure and rehabilitation planning for residue disposal facilities is important to ensure, that once decommissioned, the facility has a closure plan that is sustainable in the long term and offers a “walk-away” situation, while conforming to regulatory requirements. Not only will the closure and rehabilitation planning provide long-term stability, but it will also ensure that the facilities are aesthetically pleasing and will prevent chemical and physical degradation. Closure design services include the following aspects:
  • Data terrain modelling and 3-dimensional visualisation
  • Closure design conceptualisation
  • Engineering design for closure
  • Pollution control measures
  • After-care and monitoring
  • Closure cost estimates
